盐系男子 Yánxìnánzǐ

Since: 2016

Origin: Japan

Meaning: Intellectual and physically attractive guy.

盐系男子, also written 盐系男, refers to the men’s world from women’s point of view. It comes from a Japanese Drama, where is a wide choice of words can describe many typologies of men.

Like salt gives flavour to all dishes, so a “salty” man can enrich your daily life. Every woman in the world has dreamt about a 盐系男 once in her life, so… what kind of characteristics does he have?

This word usually describes Eastern men ( in contrast with 酱油男子, referred to Western ones) interested in cultural topics and with whom women may have a relationship/conversation intellectually engaging. Their view of life is of the Artist’s. Their physical characteristics are really specific: thin, with an “obvious” Adam’s apple, thin lips and a single-edged eyelid (no surgery here 😋), plus really handsome. Clothing is another important feature: usually plain colours, simple and casual.

Need to know: This word became really popular after it was used in the Japanese Drama “It’s not that I can’t marry, I don’t marry” (“我不是不能结婚,而是不想”).

Related words: 森系女, 酱油男子, 酷系男子, 犬系男猫系男子, 蛋黄酱系男子, 番茄系男子, 小鲜肉

In Use: 我想找个盐系男子谈恋爱! ( I would like to date a “Salty man”!)
