网红 wǎnghóng

Meaning: Web celebrity (KOL).

Chinese web has many 网红 (wǎnghóng)! They’re Chinese web Key opinion leaders. They became popular on the internet and started their own career through this new medium. The Medium is what differentiate them from all other kinds of celebrities, it is the way they reached fame.

We can divide 网红 wǎnghóng in three different categories, based on the types of posts they write :

– text generation, KOL who became popular among the netizens writing posts mainly using just texts and sentences;

– image generation, bloggers who mainly used images to write their posts and who based their web supremacy wearing expensive and colorful clothes;

– web generation, web celebrities who started to use all the opportunities and the communication channels that the web have.

Need to know: As being a 网红 (wǎnghóng) has become so fashionable and lucrative, nowadays there are many chinese firms which get paid to help people to become KOLs!
